Algiers welcomed a high-level American delegation this Monday, comprising Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson. At the heart of the discussions: intensifying counterterrorism cooperation in the Sahel-Saharan strip, a theater of persistent armed violence.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received the American officials in the capital for a series of talks focused on the major security and geopolitical challenges shaking North Africa and the Sahel. This official visit is part of the stated desire by both countries to consolidate a strategic partnership in the face of an evolving terrorist threat.
Terrorist Threat and Security Cooperation
The discussions primarily centered on ways to strengthen collaboration between Algiers and Washington to combat armed groups active in the Sahel region. General Anderson stressed the urgency of coordinated action in the face of the global spread of terrorism, praising Algeria’s security expertise along the way.
« Algeria constitutes an essential pillar for maintaining balance and tranquility in this part of the African continent, » stated the AFRICOM commander.
The exchanges also covered practical modalities of cooperation, notably the reinforcement of intelligence capabilities and the organization of joint operations.
Development: The Other Facet of Counterterrorism
Beyond the strictly military and police dimensions, American officials advocated for a multidimensional approach. Dagvin Anderson thus recalled that purely security solutions are insufficient without economic and social support.
According to him, investment, growth, and social progress are indispensable levers to durably eradicate terrorist threats. This vision aligns with Algeria’s long-standing concerns, which advocates for a comprehensive strategy combining repression and development to stabilize vulnerable areas.
Western Sahara Joins the Negotiating Table
Another sensitive issue addressed during this meeting: the Western Sahara conflict. Christopher Landau described this file as a « major concern of American diplomacy in the region, » mentioning the possibility of coordination between Washington and Algiers to work towards a resolution of this five-decade-old dispute.
This mention illustrates a notable broadening of the scope of bilateral discussions, now extending beyond the sole counterterrorism sphere to touch upon the geopolitical balances of the entire North African region.
Bilateral Relations Looking to the Future
Christopher Landau, for his part, described these talks as « excellent and rich in substance, » recalling the long-standing ties between the two countries, dating back to the 18th century. He also emphasized the common desire to deepen trade and economic exchanges for the benefit of both peoples.
Algiers and Washington have committed to expanding their cooperation in all areas promoting regional stability and prosperity. This high-level visit thus demonstrates a partnership in full evolution, oriented towards continuous dialogue in the service of regional peace.
