Selon Alifpost, l’Envoyé Personnel de l’ONU pour le Sahara Occidental, Christopher Ross, a l’intention de jeter l’éponge. D’après Abderrazak Laassel, représentant permanent adjoint du Maroc auprès de l’ONU à New York, la question a été posée lors du briefing quotidien de l’ONU le 4 août, et la réponse du porte-parole a été beaucoup plus courte. « Nous avons vu ces rapports médiatiques sur l’envoyé personnel du Secrétaire Général pour le Sahara Occidental. Ces rapports n’ont aucun fondement. M. Ross, l’Ambassadeur Ross, poursuit ses consultations avec les parties, à la fois sur leurs préoccupations évidemment, mais aussi sur le calendrier de sa prochaine visite dans la région », précise le resposable onusien. «
En réponse à ces allégations, Ross a envoyé un email au SG du MAE marocain, Nasser Bourita. « L’article le plus récent qui est paru à mon sujet dans la version arabe d’AlifPost est une pure invention. Je n’ai absolument pas l’intention de démissionner, et les prétendues sources de l’Union européenne d’al-Quds al-`Arabi/AlifPost se trompent à cent pour cent sur ce point ! »
Dans un autre courrier reçu par Bourita, Ross précise qu’il n’est « pas au courant d’un quelconque effort au sein du Secrétariat pour générer des questions et des réponses visant à faire pression sur le Maroc. Après plusieurs séries de spéculations, d’abord dans la presse marocaine, puis plus largement dans la presse régionale, selon lesquelles j’envisageais de démissionner, j’ai préparé la réponse suivante le 21 juillet, au cas où le porte-parole se verrait poser une question sur ces rapports ». « Les rapports des médias nord-africains prétendant que l’Envoyé personnel du Secrétaire général pour le Sahara Occidental pourrait démissionner ou qu’il pourrait proposer la fin du processus de négociation qu’il a facilité sont de pures inventions et sans fondement. Avec le plein soutien du Secrétaire général et du Conseil de sécurité, l’Envoyé personnel, M. Christopher Ross, poursuit ses consultations concernant les préoccupations des parties et le calendrier de sa prochaine visite dans la région. Son mandat demeure celui d’aider les parties à parvenir à une solution politique juste, durable et mutuellement acceptable, qui permette l’autodétermination du peuple du Sahara Occidental, et ses activités continuent d’être guidées par les résolutions successives du Conseil de Sécurité, qui, entre autres, appellent les parties et les Etats voisins à coopérer plus pleinement avec les Nations Unies et entre eux dans la recherche d’un règlement. Cette réponse se voulait juste et équilibrée. Il n’y avait aucune allusion à une pression sur le Maroc. En revanche, la dernière phrase se voulait un signal pour l’Algérie », indique-t-il.

> That response was intended to be fair and balanced. There was no hint of pressure on Morocco. Par contre, the last sentence was intended as a signal to Algeria.
> In the absence of any questions, the UN Press Office shared the above statement with the MAP correspondent on 23 July.
> As it happened, the question did come up in the daily UN briefing on 4 August, and the spokesperson’s response was much shorter:

There are persistent rumours that Christopher Ross is no longer trusted by both parties in the conflict and is about to resign or is thinking about resigning.
