According to Carlos Ruiz Miguel, yesterday two official U.S. accounts posted tweets aligning themselves with the Moroccan regime and attacking the Polisario Front.
In his view, these tweets “violate international law and discredit the United States as a mediator in negotiations between the two parties, and they deserve some reflection.”
The professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela described the tweet from the U.S. representation at the United Nations as “a display of cynicism.”
“United States condemns an attack by the Polisario Front against military targets in the occupied city of Smara, but it has not condemned ANY attack by Morocco against military personnel OR CIVILIANS in the non-occupied part of Western Sahara,” Ruiz Miguel wrote in a tweet.
According to him, “the tweet by the new U.S. ambassador to Morocco rivals the previous one in cynicism. Not only because the Polisario Front attack had a military target, but also because saying that the resistance of a people who are victims of a genocidal military invasion is « against peace.”
What can be inferred from these tweets?
1) First, they show a TOTAL alignment of the United States with one side in the conflict (Morocco) and hostility toward the other side (the Polisario Front).
This alignment disqualifies the United States from mediating negotiations.
2) Second, the fact that the United States is tweeting this can, I believe, be interpreted as a sign that the negotiation process it sponsored between Morocco and the Polisario Front has failed (as could hardly have been otherwise with such a “mediator”), and that it intends to “punish” the Polisario Front.
3) Third, and from a substantive point of view, the United States is violating international law by endorsing an illegal aggression and occupation, by denying the RIGHT of the representative of the Sahrawi people to resist occupation—a right recognized by the United Nations.”
