Newly released US Department of Justice files have reignited speculation about whether convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein had ties to Israeli intelligence, amid conflicting evidence and denials from those involved.
The documents include claims from an FBI confidential informant who alleged Epstein was a “co-opted Mossad agent,” trained as a spy and connected to intelligence networks through prominent legal and political figures. An internal FBI report from 2020 noted the source’s belief but stopped short of confirming the claims.
Epstein’s documented relationships with senior Israeli figures, including former prime minister Ehud Barak, have added to the intrigue. Emails show Barak and his wife stayed at Epstein’s New York residence multiple times, even after Epstein’s first arrest in 2006. Epstein himself asked Barak in a 2018 email to “make clear that I don’t work for Mossad.”
The files also detail Epstein’s financial involvement in Israeli technology startups, his repeated travel to Israel, efforts to secure travel documents for Ghislaine Maxwell, and extensive correspondence referencing Israeli business and political circles.
Claims of intelligence ties have been strongly denied. Alan Dershowitz, Epstein’s longtime lawyer, dismissed the allegations as implausible, while current Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Epstein’s visible relationships with Israeli leaders argued against him being a spy.
Intelligence experts caution against drawing conclusions. While some note it is theoretically possible Epstein was used as an “asset,” they stress there is no evidence he formally worked for any intelligence agency.
