South African Sports Ministry clarifies position on 2026 WAFCON

South Africa continues to pursue a long-term strategy to host major events, including a reported bid for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Pretoria, South Africa – The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr. Gayton McKenzie, has issued a statement to clarify remarks made regarding the hosting of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

This follows comments by Deputy Minister Peace Mabe at an awards ceremony on Sunday, indicating that South Africa would host the tournament after Morocco’s withdrawal.

Minister McKenzie emphasised that “no formal decision has been taken to relocate” the 2026 WAFCON, and Morocco remains the officially designated host. He stated that the remarks made “do not constitute a formal confirmation or assumption of hosting responsibilities.”

The clarification outlines the current status:

  • The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not yet initiated any formal alternative hosting process.
  • South Africa has expressed its willingness to support CAF if required, should alternative arrangements become necessary.
  • These discussions are part of ongoing contingency planning by CAF.

Minister McKenzie affirmed that the deputy minister’s comments reflect the government’s “longstanding engagement on supporting African football and South Africa’s confidence in its proven ability to host major international sporting events.”

Note to Editors:
With the 16-team tournament scheduled to begin on 17 March 2026, any potential change in host nation would present a significant logistical challenge, despite South Africa possessing multiple CAF-approved stadiums.

CAF has been contacted for comment on the matter.
