Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israeli strikes on Lebanon, according to state media reports cited by the Associated Press, effectively halting traffic through one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints just hours after a fragile ceasefire with the United States.
The move threatens flows through a route that carries roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, raising fresh concerns over energy markets and maritime security.
Earlier in the day, Iran warned it could withdraw from the fragile ceasefire with the United States, accusing Israel of violating the truce by continuing its attacks in Lebanon.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi raised what he described as “ceasefire violations” by Israel during a call with Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir. He said he had “discussed the Zionist regime’s violations of the ceasefire in Iran and Lebanon,” according to a statement from Iran’s foreign ministry.
