Veron Mosengo-Omba has stepped down as general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) amid mounting criticism and a broader crisis of confidence within the organisation. His departure follows controversy over the decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title and growing calls for an investigation into alleged corruption.
Although Mosengo-Omba said he was retiring after a long career, he had faced pressure to leave, including criticism for remaining in post beyond the mandatory retirement age. A divisive figure, he had also been accused of fostering a toxic work environment, though an internal investigation cleared him.
His exit comes at a turbulent time for CAF, with its leadership under scrutiny and concerns over the integrity of African football governance. Mosengo-Omba is reportedly considering a future role in Congolese football, while CAF has appointed competitions director Samson Adamu as interim general secretary.

PRESS RELEASE
Cairo, 29th March 2026
After over 30 years of an international professional career dedicated to promoting an ideal form of football that brings people together, educates, and creates opportunities for hope, I have decided to step down from my position as Secretary General of CAF to devote myself to more personal projects.
Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever.
I sincerely thank the CAF’s President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, my teams, and all those who, directly or indirectly, have enabled CAF and organized African football to make real and remarkable progress.
Let us hope that the progress made will last and be sustained.
