Reuters reports that newly released U.S. Justice Department documents include an email from a New York prosecutor stating that Donald Trump flew on Jeffrey Epstein’s private jet eight times in the 1990s, more than previously reported. Some of those flights reportedly included Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for assisting Epstein in sexually abusing underage girls. One flight allegedly listed only Epstein, Trump, and a 20-year-old woman as passengers, though no wrongdoing by Trump is alleged in the documents.
Trump has denied ever flying on Epstein’s plane or visiting his island and has said his social relationship with Epstein ended in the mid-2000s. The prosecutor’s email does not accuse Trump of any crimes. The Justice Department said some claims in the released materials are untrue or sensationalized and emphasized that the documents are being released to comply with a new transparency law, not because the allegations are substantiated.
The document release includes about 30,000 pages and various media files, many heavily redacted. Among them are photos showing Trump and Maxwell together at public events, references to Trump in FBI tip-line calls of unclear credibility, and materials the DOJ later labeled as fake or unverified. The government stated it will continue releasing Epstein-related files as legally required.
The disclosures have sparked political controversy. Some Republicans criticized the extent of redactions, while Trump downplayed the importance of the files, calling them a political distraction. The transparency law mandating the release passed Congress overwhelmingly despite Trump’s prior efforts to keep the records sealed.
