Recent media reports have attributed certain statements to the Federal Republic of Somalia regarding the issue of Western Sahara. We wish to clarify that Somalia’s official position is conveyed exclusively through its formal statements and official communications. In this regard, Somalia takes note of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and the important role it plays in supporting the peaceful settlement process under the auspices of the United Nations.

In line with Somalia’s commitment to promoting peaceful solutions, we call on the two parties to engage in serious and direct negotiations with a view to reaching a peaceful, final, and mutually acceptable solution for the benefit of the people of the region, and in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions.

Somalia also expresses its full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to relaunch the political process. At the same time, Somalia reaffirms its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Kingdom of Morocco and to the mutual respect for each country’s national unity and sovereignty.
