The US dangling NATO membership for Ukraine in front of Russia led to this exact situation, and Washington knew under successive administrations that Ukraine would get mauled in the event of war with Russia.
Zelensky refused to concretely rule out NATO membership, and then put the US in the position of having to supply hundreds of billions of dollars worth of military aid. Now the US finds itself in a position where its own stockpiles are running low.
Zelensky grossly miscalculated; when Europe and Washington under Biden convinced him to fight until impossible victory, he presumed that would mean a blank cheque forever…
What he didn’t study is the US’ conduct in proxy wars. Proxies are kept going until their usefulness is used up, and often, that change happens at a rapid, unpredictable face.
Now Zelensky has lost perhaps over a million Ukrainian soldiers, lost more land each day, and now he is about to lose his political power.
